First Class Symbol

The Scout Badge is the badge of the First Class Boy Scout

The heart of the scout badge is a shape called a TREFOIL meaning 3 leaves. Like the 3 fingers in the Scout Sign, the 3 leaves of the trefoil represent the 3 parts of the Scout Oath: Duty to God and Country -- Duty to Others -- Duty to Self.

The middle point of the trefoil is adapted from the north point of an old mariner's compass and signifies that a Scout can point the right way in life as truly as a compass does in the field.

The EAGLE WITH THE SHIELD stands for freedom and a Scout's readiness to defend that freedom.

The SCROLL with the Scout motto is turned up at the ends to remind a Scout to smile as he does his duty. The KNOT at the bottom of the scroll is a reminder to "Do a Good Turn Daily."

The TWO STARS symbolize truth and knowledge and the Outdoors of Scouting.
